The Sick State of Healthcare Data Breaches

1 in 3 Americans were victims of healthcare data breaches, attributed to a series of large-scale attacks that each affected more than 10 million individuals, according to Bitglass’ 2016 Healthcare Breach Report. Among the most significant findings of the report was that in 2015, 98 percent of record leaks were due to large-scale breaches targeting the healthcare industry. These high-profile attacks were the largest source of healthcare data loss and indicate that cyber attackers are increasingly targeting medical data.

2016 Data Breaches Expose 1.4 Million Records

The latest count from the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) reports that there has been a total of 69 data breaches recorded through February 9, 2016, and that more than 1.4 million records have been exposed since the beginning of the year. The largest data breach to date was reported by Centene Corp. (NYSE: CNC) and involved medical information on 950,000 subscribers to the company’s health insurance products. The data were stored on six hard drives that are currently unaccounted for.

State data breach impacts 91,000 Apple Healthcare Clients

Majority of 2015 Healthcare Data Breaches are Due to IT Hacking

The number of hacking incidents causing healthcare data breaches jumped from 53% in 2014 to 98% in 2015, this Redspin report shows.

This past year saw over one million patient health files breached through nearly 258 large-scale healthcare data breaches. According to Redspin’s recent Breach Report 2015: Protected Health Information (PHI), 98 percent of those breaches were caused by an IT hacking incident.

Encryption has it’s place but isn’t foolproof

Most encrypted data is unencrypted at some point in its lifecycle — and the bad guys are pretty good at finding the one window left open.

Last year, an uncovered Snowden document from the US National Intelligence Council warned that the slow deployment of encryption and other technologies is putting government and private computers at risk of cyber attacks. The annual cost of cybercrime to the global economy is estimated at over $400 billion. Encryption is viewed by many experts as the go-to security technology, but data breaches and other attacks continue to rise despite advances in encryption.
